This type of lifting shackle can handle heavy loads safely when used correctly. You should only use them for inline tasks, never for angled loading.
D shackles have straight sides with a lightly curved saddle at one end opposite the pin used to secure it.
You should always ensure the sling fits neatly into the shackle saddle, it should never bunch up the sides, if it does your sling is too wide or the shackle is too small so the sizes will need to be adjusted on one or the other.
