The metal sheets must, however be ferro-magnetic which means they are capable of holding magnetism. Not all metals are magnetic so checks will need to be made. Typical alloy steel is usually fine due to being made from a mix of substances. Including iron, nickel and manganese which all have magnetic properties. Some stainless steel, cast iron, high carbon steels and other non ferrous metals do not have these properties and so can not be lifted with a magnetic lifter.
